The Seattle Composers Alliance

We are a non-profit professional organization made up of working composers, students, and others interested in professional music composition. The SCA was created so that composers could gather with their peers in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere and share knowledge, experience and information. But we also have an agenda: special forums and seminars of interest to our members; expanding Seattle’s reputation as a center for musical creativity; and educational outreach to our community.

Hollywood Orchestration: The Music Of John Williams with Norman Ludwin

The Seattle Composers Alliance presents “Hollywood Orchestration: The Music Of John Williams” with Norman Ludwin! Please join us at the Seattle Film Institute on Tuesday, August 19th from 7pm – 10pm for an evening of exploration of the Hollywood sound through an in-depth guided tour of selected music cues by John Williams, including a cue from “Jaws”, “Born on the 4th of July”, and others. Handouts will be given, and we will also be presented with a short presentation on “Hollywood Orchestration: An Overview of Concepts.”

With this event, all participants will receive a printed copy of Norman’s “ANTHOLOGY OF SCORES VOLUME TWO – 20th and 21st Century Music”, which includes ten modern scores edited for the orchestration student. These scores are annotated with the same method that Norman employs in his previous books: boxes, categories, and arrows to highlight the music and instruct the reader.
Each work includes a full score, analysis notes, exercises based on the composition and further recommended works to study. Examples of included scores are John Adams – “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”, Leonard Bernstein – “On The Waterfront”, Aaron Copland – “Grover’s Corner”, and seven others.

His recent orchestration credits include: Star Trek Into Darkness, Super-8, John Carter, and Priest. Ludwin has written many books on orchestration, including: “Orchestration, A New Approach- Volume One’ and “An Anthology of Scores for Study, Volume 1”.

Seattle Ravel Study

ravelThe Seattle Composers Alliance presents

Seattle Ravel Study

Inspired by Ron Jones’ Ravel Study in L.A., we are proud to present a new chapter of the study group here in the Northwest.  Join us July 8th from 7pm to 9pm at the Seattle Film Institute in the theater, where we’ll dive deep into the analysis of Daphnis and Chloe, Suites 1 and 2, in this first of a series of meetings.  Long held by critics as Ravel’s “masterpiece for orchestra,” we will explore what makes a great orchestration, and how we can make our own music better.

What: SCA presents Seattle Ravel Study: Daphnis et Chloe, Suites 1 & 2 (First Meeting)

When: July 8th – 7pm to 9pm

Where: Seattle Film Institute, 3210 16th Ave W

Everyone is welcome to attend!  There are no requirements, no home work, other than bring your curiosity and enthusiasm for great music.  If you do wish to roll up your sleeves and dig in with us, you can purchase a copy of the Suites 1 and 2 and the CD.  We will be using specific materials, so check out the information below on the versions we are using.

Also, you are welcome to download the extra materials provided by Ron with some tips on how to better explore the score on your own. Please let your friends know, too.
