The Seattle Composers Alliance

We are a non-profit professional organization made up of working composers, students, and others interested in professional music composition. The SCA was created so that composers could gather with their peers in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere and share knowledge, experience and information. But we also have an agenda: special forums and seminars of interest to our members; expanding Seattle’s reputation as a center for musical creativity; and educational outreach to our community.

SCA Year in Review + New Website Announcement!

The Seattle Composers Alliance continues to be a dynamic presence in our local composer community. In 2014 under the Board of Directors’ leadership with Brad Hawkins serving as President, the SCA presented several educational workshops and seminars including an oboe techniques seminar with Brent Hages, tablet and mobile technology with Brian Monroney, and a lecture on the making of the Forza 5 soundtrack with Lance Hayes. Also offered were gatherings for in-depth study of existing scores such as works of John Williams with LA composer Norman Ludwin, and Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé with study materials provided by Ron Jones and led by Eric Nielsen and Eric Goetz.
A special presentation on writing for string quartet with Kenneth Benshoof paved the way for SCA’s First Annual International Call for Scores Competition: Works for String Quartet, with ten winning scores selected by blind jury performed and recorded live at The Chapel performance space at the Good Shepherd Center – winners to be announced soon.
The SCA strives to be a visible presence and valued resource for local filmmakers, and again participated in the 2014 Local Sightings Film Festival at Northwest Film Forum, choosing Best Original Score for both feature length and short film and presenting cash prizes to the talented winning composers.  SCA also sponsored the film Lady Be Good at 2014 SIFF, and held a Meet and Greet following the World Premiere. SCA members also participated as panelists at various game and film industry conferences.
Among the important events of 2014 was a successful fundraising auction, Swing into Spring Soirée, with an online auction portion new for 2014. Proceeds of this fundraiser make possible the continuance of our outreach programs as well as a complete overhaul of the SCA website, soon to bring you even better access to resources and information as well as a revised discussion mailing list.  Expect this in the first months of 2015.
