Meet The Composer:
Hummie Mann's "P.T. Barnum"
A rare look into the creative process of scoring music for film.
September 21, 1999 at
Music Works Northwest.
The Seattle Composers Alliance proudly presented
two-time Emmy Award-Winning Northwest composer
Hummie Mann, discussing
his experience with composing and conducting the musical score for the
biographical mini-series "P.T. Barnum."
The program aired nationally
on the cable channel A&E on September 12 & 13 and re-aired in it's
entirety on September 18.
Hummie's "Americana"-style music for this nationally televised
mini-series was performed and recorded here in the Seattle area at
Studio X, using local freelance orchestral players.
Directed by Simon Wincer (Lonesome Dove), the A&E mini-series "P.T.
Barnum" stars Beau Bridges (Norma Rae, The Fabulous Baker Boys) as
Phineous Taylor Barnum, the man whose circus spectacles of the late 19th
century brought the world Tom Thumb, Siamese Twins Chang and Eng, and
Jumbo the Elephant, and whose innovative business practices forever
changed the manner in which advertising, publicity and entertainment are
conducted in the United States.
Hummie gave audience members a chance to look into the creative
process behind scoring music for film. Individual scenes from the
film were screened and discussed, as well as the dynamics
between a film composer and the director, and the technical challenges
of finishing the musical project.
