Legal Issues Surrounding Self Released CDs

October 16, 2000 at Music Works Northwest.

Music business consultant Chris Knab and entertainment attorney Bart Day spoke on the legal concerns that musicians must consider when releasing and distributing their own work on CDs. They addressed such issues as contracts, copyrights, obtaining UPC codes, licensing and distribution.

Recently honored by Seattlešs Rocket magazine as "One of the Most Influential People in the Northwest Music Industry", Chris Knab is a music business consultant, author and lecturer. Founder and former owner of the San Francisco-based 415 Records label (Romeo Void, Red Rockers), Chris currently runs FourFront Media and Music, a consultation service based in Seattle that helps musicians develop marketing and career plans, and is a faculty member of the Audio and Music Business Program at the Art Institute of Seattle. In 1999 he authored the "FourFront Music Marketing Handbook," a self-help manual for musicians releasing their own independent music.

Bart Day is a Portland-based entertainment attorney with over twenty years music industry experience. Bart's music clients have included numerous well-known artists, including members of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies (Mojo/Universal Records); Quarterflash (Epic Records); U-Krew (Capitol Records/Zomba Music); the Dharma Bums (Frontier/RCA Records); and Grammy Award-winning video producer James Blashfield (Talking Heads, Paul Simon, et al.), as well as numerous independent record labels, music publishers, producers, managers, and Internet-related companies. In addition, he has handled music licensing matters for such artists as The Kingsmen ("Louie, Louie"), The Fleetwoods (Capitol Records), and Merrilee Rush ("Angel of the Morning"), and various film production companies and advertising agencies.

Chris and Bart co-authored an extensive chapter on "Independent Label Deals with Major Labels" in the revised second edition of "The Musician's Legal and Business Guide" published by Prentice-Hall and the Beverly Hills Bar Association in 1996.
