Adam Stern, Seattle Symphony Orchestra's Associate Conductor, moderated the kick-off evening of the series. Adam led a discussion on Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe(1912).

Commissioned by Diaghilev for the Ballet Russes, Ravel's orchestral masterpiece offers a rich musical setting of a Greek fable by Longus. This 20th-century classic displays the composer's genius for transmuting a traditional musical idiom into a fresh and stirring language of his own.

(NOTE: Mr. Stern discussed the full version of the Daphnis et Chloe, not the popular Suite No.2 version of the piece.)

For those looking for an excellent recording of the piece, Adam recommends the Seattle Symphony Orchestra's 1991 recording of Daphnis et Chloe on Delos (#3110).

Capitol Music Center is the official sponsor of the SCA Monthly Score Salon.
