The SCA was proud to present its new SCA Tech and Tools seminar series. These
monthly seminars are devoted to the day-to-day tools used by working composers on their craft:
harmony, software, gear, notation, production, orchestration, etc. Tech and Tools seminars
are be taught by working composers who share their techniques and experiences with you.
The seminars are available to SCA members only, although non-members may
join the SCA at the seminar.
Kicking off the series was the first of a 4-part seminar by Hummie Mann entitled,
Harmonic Approaches for Working Composers (or Stuff I Learned At Berklee,
Stuff I Figured Out, and Other Stuff I Use Everyday). Those who attended Hummie's
SCA Score Salon presentation in March on
Vaughn-Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis heard his approach
to harmonic analysis of the piece, using the modal interchange system taught at Berklee.
Several attendees stayed after to learn more about the system.
In the first installment of Harmonic Approaches for Working Composers, Hummie began covering these
harmonic systems in detail, as well as
- Advanced concepts in chord progressions and analysis
- Chord/Scale relationships
- Modal Interchange
- Voicing Concepts and Techniques
