Sound Currents

February 25, 2003 at Holy Trinity Luthern Church, Mercer Island, Washington

Sound Currents logo The Seattle Composers Alliance is proud to announce the first SCA-sponsored concert series: Sound Currents.

Co-sponsored by the Washington Composers Forum, this bi-annual concert series was founded by four SCA members to showcase works written for commerical work-for-hire projects or by commercial music composers in a traditional concert setting. Our goal is to continue to educate the public on the vast amount of fascinating music that is being provided for video games, software, and film by performing those works in extended forms in the concert hall.

The debut concert on February 25th will feature:

  • Odeon String Quartet, performing String Quartet No. 1 by Geoff Ogle
  • Odeon String Quartet performing Music from Arcanum, a suite by Ben Houge taken from his score to the Sierra Entertainment computer role-playing game Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura
  • Clarinetists Florie Rothenberg and Andrea Smardon, with Bassoonist Ryan Hare performing Water for Pistons by Korby Sears, a piece based on the urban legend of the water engine
  • Folding, a vocal improv-electronics work by Mike Min, featuring performances by SCA members Erik Aho, Guy Whitmore, and Ben Houge

A Waffle Reception will take place immediately following the concert. A second Sound Currents concert will be planned for the fall.

For more info and program notes, check out: www.soundcurrents.org

For a preview: Korby Sears' Water for Pistons will be performed Friday, January 31st, at 8pm at Tom Baker's Seattle Composers Salon, an informal presentation of works in progress. At Soundbridge, in Bennaroya Hall (entrance on the SE corner of Union and 2nd). $5 suggested donation. For more info, see composersalon.com/SalonFuture.htm

Media alert: Ben Houge will be a guest on KUOW-94.9FMs arts program The Beat—hosted by Dave Beck—on February 24th, at 2pm. Ben will discus the Sound Currents concert in particular and the state of game audio/commercial music in general.

Sound Currents is supported by a generous grant from Meet the Composer. Funding from Meet the Composer, Inc. is provided with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, and the Virgil Thomson Foundation. Co-sponsored by the Washington Composers Forum and the Seattle Composers Alliance.
