An Evening with Dave Bristow
December, 7 2004 at
Bad Animals
Dave Bristow was heavily involved in the development of the Yamaha
DX7. He will talk about the history of FM synthesis, and the transition
of FM, since its introduction as a commercial synthesis in the 80s, to
occupying 40% of the world ringtone/cellphone market. Topics covered
may include commercial ringtone development (a new market for composers),
psychoacoustics, and electronic music fundamentals.
Dave Bristow is once again working closely with Yamaha on
the development and voicing of their FM ringtone audio chips for mobile
devices. He has spent the last couple of years making numerous
ringtones, voices and system alert sounds in Yamaha's SMAF format (Synthetic
music Mobile Audio Format). He also provides expert support for their USA
based network of SMAF content developers. In addition he teaches Electronic
Music at Olympic College, does keyboard improvisation from his home
studio, the occasional gig and working on music/video projects with
local artists on Bainbridge Island. He also spent some years with
Emu systems in Santa Cruz, working on sampling keyboard instruments and
various other projects - and a couple of years at Creative
Technologies with the original Nomad Jukebox design team.
